Anna Wintour Shares Her Milan and Paris Fashion Week Highlights - Vogue

After a whirlwind of Fall 2019 shows in Milan and Paris, Vogue’s Anna Wintour sat down to regroup about some of the season’s best shows and biggest trends. Among her highlights are the checks and menswear-inspired tailoring at Christian Dior, Givenchy, and Balenciaga; the eclectic spirit at Etro, Marni, and Paco Rabanne; and the dark, brooding romance of Prada, Valentino, and Alexander McQueen.

Also top of mind for Vogue’s editor-in-chief this season is sustainability, thanks in no small part to Stella McCartney’s efforts around the issue. “Stella, obviously, must be feeling so proud and in a way so vindicated right now,” says Wintour of McCartney’s early eco-activism. “This is an issue that Stella had championed for 10, 15, 20 years, and the world is paying attention.”

Wintour points to a series of young talents who are leading fashion into the future. Daniel Lee, the new creative director at Bottega Veneta, gets special mention, as do Anthony Vaccarello at Saint Laurent, and Jonathan Anderson at Loewe and his namesake brand. Nicolas Ghesquière and John Galliano, she notes, continue to push the boundaries of what a fashion show or a garment can be.

Of course, the season wasn’t solely defined by what happened on the runways. The passing of Karl Lagerfeld at the start of Milan Fashion Week cast a sorrowful mood over the goings-on, with many mourning the loss of one of the world’s most influential creators. Lagerfeld’s final shows for Fendi and Chanel deserve special mention for the ways in which they showcased the heritage of the maisons, while still being full of his own signature wit and joie de vivre.
