When music royalty meets Hollywood royalty.

Rihanna couldn’t help but fangirl over actress Natalie Portman ahead of the Christian Dior fashion show during Paris Fashion Week on Monday.

The billionaire singer-turned-businesswoman, 35, gushed over the Oscar winner, 42, just seconds after seeing her arrive at the haute couture show.

“You are one of the hottest bitches in Hollywood forever,” Rihanna told the “May December” actress in a clip shared on social media, adding that she’s a “fan” of hers.

“You do the most innocent look and I’m like, ‘Ah!’”

The compliment took Portman aback, as she revealed that she, in turn, was a huge fan of Rihanna’s.

Portman told the singer that she might “faint” and “black out” after hearing the compliments.

On Monday (Jan. 22), the Dior Haute Couture show featured a new collection from the iconic fashion house and a hilarious link-up between Rihanna and Natalie Portman.

Donning a textured all-black outfit comprised of a puffy belted jacket, a figure-hugging skirt, leather gloves and a statement cap, the “Diamonds” singer shined in the show’s front row. While a stunning Rihanna fashion moment is always expected, watching Rihanna gush over Portman was a real Fashion Week moment.

More from Billboard

“I am f—ing fan!” RiRi raved. “You’re one of the hottest bi—es in Hollywood forever!”

The two stars ran into each other outside the show and immediately shared a tight hug, rocking back and forth as they fangirled over one another. “You do the most innocent look, and I’m like ‘Ugh!'” the “Umbrella” singer said as she twirled in excitement.

Portman, who wore a black oversize blazer over a black minidress, shared in Rihanna’s excitement, expressing her love for the nine-time Grammy winner and accepting her compliments in disbelief. “Are you kidding me? Excuse me, I’m gonna faint. I’m gonna black out!” the Oscar-winning actress said in response to Rihanna’s proclamation of fandom. “I love you and I listen to your music all the time and you’re just such a queen, thank you!”

Naturally, Rihanna asked the paps to take a picture of her and Portman, and the Black Swan actress ecstatically obliged. “Can somebody take a picture so I can remember this happened tomorrow?!” quipped the pop superstar. “I don’t get excited about anybody!” The two ladies then shared one final hug.

This crossover marked the beginning of a big week for Portman. The acclaimed actress could score her fourth career Oscar nomination for her starring role in Todd Haynes’ May December when noms are revealed Tuesday. And since he’s from Texas, and still a boy at heart, Roseberry also alluded in his Schiaparelli collection to horses and cowboys, aliens from outer space, genuine technological artifacts like CDs, and the movies. Saying that much of the show was based on things in his memory, he ended it with the music from Top Gun.

Maria Grazia Chiuri, the women’s creative director of Dior, was doing some excavations of her own. She revisited a 1952 Dior collection, specifically a sculptural dress in silk moiré called La Cigale. Amazingly, Christian Dior’s description of the dress had been preserved, and, he said he wanted to combine a feeling of history with the streamlined aesthetic of the 1950s, namely, planes, trains, and automobiles. So La Cigale was a kind of 17th-century court dress — extending a bit from the hips — but also seemingly engineered for speed. And Chiuri has taken that concept and considered it again in a sublime haute couture collection, on Monday in Paris.

For her show, Chiuri invited the artist Isabella Ducrot to adorn the walls with 23 enormous paintings of dresses, mostly historical, some evoking Eastern cultures, and all surrounded by a hazy aura. Ducrot called her installation “Big Aura,” partly in reference to questions that German philosopher and critic Walter Benjamin famously raised in the 1930s about the impact of reproduction on original, one-of-a-kind art. He had in mind photography, essentially asking if the reproduced image causes a loss of aura. And the Dior show notes cited Benjamin, which sounds pretty highfalutin.

Well, lots of designers over the years have drawn on Benjamin — Alessandro Michele, for one — and Benjamin himself wrote a lot about fashion in The Arcades Project, his landmark study of 19th-century French capitalist culture. One of the oddities that intrigued Benjamin was the amount of plush materials, notably velvet, used in homes that could leave a “trace” of a person. It leaves the mark of an individual. That’s perhaps not the same as “aura,” but trace is what you nonetheless experience in the best couture, one of the last crafts made almost entirely by human hands, for individual bodies, and springing from memories and unexpected connections. You sense those elements, in different degrees in a couture garment, you couldn’t really do with a machine made garment, which is produced in the thousands

Roseberry’s Schiaparelli is doggedly and dangerously in that spirit, sometimes pushing things over the edge — perhaps deliberately. Chiuri primarily used cotton, silk velvet, and silk moiré. Moiré has been used for centuries, originally in Asia and then for European royals and clergy. It’s produced on mechanized looms, but the watery effect is achieved by hand. As a result, no two meters of cloth are the same. And today, according to Dior, only one firm in France — Benaud of Lyon — still produces real moiré.

Roseberry, who previously worked at Thom Browne, is talented and curious enough to design for almost any house, and couture has clearly fed his imagination. Backstage on Monday, greeting Jennifer Lopez, he explained that her fluffy, white, flower-petal jacket (with a Lesage-embroidered sunburst on the back) was actually made of real rose petals that had been preserved. Lopez beamed.

One of his looks this season is dubbed the “creature” dress because it’s entirely covered with white petals for a scale effect (the model wore a matching balaclava with resin eyelashes and hair). And, as he acknowledged backstage, the brand gets a lot of attention online from people doing AI versions of his designs. That might have spurred him to create pieces that looked embroidered with a small landfill of outdated technology: a dress made of flip phones, motherboards, CDs, as well as an alien robot baby (cradled by a model in rather lovely white cargo pants and an undershirt). But the idea of that kind of embellishment is not really sophisticated. For that matter, AI as designers are generally using it also isn’t interesting. It makes you seem uncool.

He said he visited the exhibition at the Palais Galliera of Azzedine Alaïa’s private collection, which is heavy on Balenciaga and Charles James.

Couture works in reverse: It can free a designer from computer screens. It puts them in company with others who do originally creative things. It exercises the mind in a different way. It supports the craft tradition as well as a culture. And for the brands that still do couture, like Chanel, Dior, and Valentino, it adds prestige.

She also showed several kimono or wrap dresses, in black crêpe, that were wonderfully simple and elegant. Similarly, there was a beautiful black velvet gown with the hint of a sweetheart neckline and subtle, subtle draping at the hips, and a singular long dress in citron-green velvet with a rolled neckline.

This season also seemed to add far more color, like the deep moiré reds and a bitter yellow on a full-skirted dress embroidered with flowers made of flattened bits of ribbon. The telling sign was in her array of neckline shapes, each as flattering as the next.

The first time I came to Paris, in October 1979, I was a grad student with two months off and a rail pass that, for $200, would take me around Europe, anywhere I wanted to go. For the six or seven nights I was in Paris, I stayed in a hotel that cost a total of maybe $80, and it was a nice place, too; nice enough for models hoping to get booked for the shows. They were going on at the time, though it would be another decade before I became a fashion writer and cared about those kinds of clothes.

Still, in 1979, the Paris streets — and later those of Barcelona, Rome, Munich, and London — provided an ample show. This was long before big brands and the virtual takeover by groups like LVMH and Kering, with their megastores vying for status as tourist landmarks and selfie backdrops. I knew enough about high fashion to know that Yves Saint Laurent was king, but I didn’t feel curious or envious, partly because there was so much style everywhere — on ordinary women, in small boutiques. And that was true of other cities, too. In Madrid, I bought the most amazing pair of wide-wale corduroy pants — dark brown, full-cut, tapering to the ankles. The look was certainly new at the time, and I doubt I spent more than $25, given that my entire cash holding for the trip was $1,800. I didn’t have a credit card.

Today, of course, even the croissant is a branding opportunity, with algorithms directing people to popular Paris bakeries, resulting in ubiquitous lines. I was thinking about all this in light of the two outstanding men’s shows, Dior and Loewe, that I caught before the start of the spring haute couture collections. In different ways, Kim Jones of Dior and Jonathan Anderson of Loewe considered the power of images and the realities of being authentic. It’s also true that we’re experiencing a hot blast of nostalgia. There are biopics in the works or already out about Christian Dior, Coco Chanel, and Cristobal Balenciaga, and there’s a show based on Truman Capote’s socialite-pal “swans.” I feel a cringe coming on, probably because those women were simply being themselves — and we live in the age of Kardashian, when beauty and personality have to be pushed and pushed. By definition, they’re fake.

Jones used as his starting point a series of black-and-white photographs that his late uncle, Colin Jones, a photojournalist, and a former dancer, took in 1966 — the same year, incidentally, as Capote’s Black and White Ball — of the ballet legend Rudolf Nureyev. The idea, an assignment from Time Life, was to document a “day in the life” of the greatest male dancer of the era — popping around London in his little car, getting dressed, and shopping for magazines. In addition to being talented and handsome, Nureyev was known for his style, which would become more exotic with fame and age. In one of Jones’s pictures, he’s wearing a blazer over a tight jumpsuit that zips into the crotch, with a paisley shirt and a low-slung leather belt embellished with coins and a Baroque buckle.

You can’t completely recapture the feeling of a period, but you can avoid a self-conscious re-creation. In his collection, Kim Jones steered well clear of the nostalgia trap. I felt he took the essence of Nureyev’s taste — modish western tailoring and hipster leather mingled with eastern trappings, notably kimonos — and carefully folded it into his established Dior style. Aside from the rather clean-looking and relaxed tailoring in gorgeous shades of gray, camel, and taupe, the key new look was a pair of zip-front flared shorts with a fine-gauge V-neck sweater, also with a zip. Sometimes the outfit was a onesie — a more modern version of Nureyev’s jumpsuit. Throughout the collection, Jones referenced dance, notably with flats based on ballet slippers. The house of Dior also has a connection to ballet through its client Margot Fonteyn, a frequent partner of Nureyev’s.

(He does couture at Fendi.) As he explained, “We always make things for men that are considered couture pieces, but they never get classified as such.” Typically, male clients have asked for made-to-measure wedding clothes. “I’m just looking at how the world’s going and seeing who’s buying what,” Jones said. In short, there’s a market, if tiny, for Dior Homme couture.

Again, one of the things that made this show so smart was that Jones didn’t use the occasion to create something retro or outrageous, as if contrived for the Met ball. Each look— a black beaded chiffon tee with draped charcoal trousers, a kimono-style coat based on a 2005 Dior design by John Galliano, a tulle-ribbon-embroidered tee, a gray pin-striped coat with a wide waist of crystal beading — conveyed what is possible in couture and at the same time what is realistic today. The circular set, by the director Baillie Walsh, nicely played up the connections Jones sought with history, his family, and dance. In the end, as the models formed two concentric circles, the platforms they stood on began to rotate with the center portion rising five or six in the air before returning to Earth.

Or the grunge lads in checked shirts and big, droopy leather pants. Or the guy wearing only a pair of jeans with a portion of a belt dangling provocatively near the fly.
Describing the vision as an “algorithm of masculinity,” Anderson said, “It’s 360 degrees — you can’t get away from media.” He said that as a throng of reporters encircled him, wiedling voice-recording phones. Inspired this season by the American painter Richard Hawkins in terms of content and color, Anderson said what probably everyone knows about the sheer glut of images:Iit levels things out. Turns individuals into a mass. And brands also function as kinds of information silos, giving you their point of view and often repeating the same styles based on what has already been sold.

The method to his fun was in the slight madness of keeping everything off-kilter: the awkward-looking boy in the loose-fitting gray suit followed by a guy in a long, lean, lapel-free coat that looked like shaved shearling (or a well-worn bathrobe) and that was worn with leather track pants and sneakers. Then a nerdy guy in a vintage-looking striped crew-neck sweater with jersey track pants.

In addition to men’s, they previewed their women’s early fall line, which features trimmer silhouettes, higher heels, and some smart-looking evening clothes — glittery but as comfy as a T-shirt. This time around, the Japanese returns to the foundations of her brand and her love for uniform.

The sacai uniform has always been rooted in unity and coming together as one piece. On a grander scheme, it takes on a greater moral value that sees the brand stand for the idea of unity as one. Continuing to play on words and with modern silhouettes, the house explores various shapes through monochromatic pairings. Sleeves are extra voluminous, while Abe introduces a new elongated vertical vertical hybrid that sees long strips twisted into a new form and accentuated with zippers.

Abe moves forward with her reconstruction ideals, recontextualizing the uniform. This time around, the palette of the collections stays true to classic navy, khaki, black and white, while also bringing a softness and gentelness with a light foam green. Knitwear patterns feature sequins for added textures while menswear saw a revival of ultra baggy workwear pants and bomber jacket and shirt hybrids. The collection also sees a collaboration with Mark Gonzales who lends his artwork to the series of badges seen on the Spiewak G8 jacket. The new sacai collaboration expands sacai’s mark in utility wear. In footwear, sacai brings forward reimagined J.M. Weston Golf Derbies and Worker boots that feature the brand’s iconic Vibram sneaker soles.

The Grammy winner, mogul and mom of two stepped out at the Dior Haute Couture show in Paris on Monday wearing an all-black outfit, including a formfitting skirt, belted padded jacket, gloves and hat (that very few people can pull off — she is one of them).

She carried a black Lady Dior bag and contrasted the all-black 'fit with white ankle-strap heels. She added some shimmer with a gorgeous diamond necklace and earrings.

For her glam, Rihanna, 35, chose a vampy lip color and kept her eye makeup smoky. Her skin had just a hint of dewiness for added shine (which could just be that new mom glow!).

When the two women bumped into each other, neither could help gushing over the other.
The two posed for photos together and Rihanna made sure everyone knew that she doesn't "get excited about anything," but she was definitely excited to meet the May December star. Portman gushed that she listens to Rihanna's music all the time, so the moment was big for both of the women. They embraced again before parting ways.

Pierpaolo Piccioli brings back menswear for Valentino for the first time in four years. Bringing a new menswear collection for Fall/Winter 2024, the collection is a continual reflection of the contemporary ideals of masculinities. This time around, Piccioli uses color as a tool to explore communications of ideas and ideals. Titled “Le Ciel,” the collection was rooted in a pure blue hue, often an archetypal marker of masculinity. With this collection, the designer reassess that trope, reconsidering and reconfiguring the conversation behind the modern man.

While the color blue was traditionally feminine before taking a turn in the past century to signify maleness, the color blue in Piccioli’s eyes also signifies freedom. In particular, “sky blue” represents the ability to think freely and quite literally believing that the sky is the limit. The juxtaposition is seen in traditional masculine wardrobe essentials like in suiting and tailoring, contrasted with the fluidity and delicacy of bold colors in pink, blue, green and orange. Bright colored tunics high collared turtle necks were worn underneath the classic black and white suit and tie ensmeble, reflecting a new age of softened tailoring. Color accents are used minimally, giving an elegant emphasis to each suiting combination. Timeless celebrations are seen throughout the collection to create the modern gentle man to subvert the stereotypical masculine ideal.

Fashion calls her look Eugenie’s “chicest outfit ever,” and remarks that her front row appearance in Paris was “totally unexpected.” Her look, the outlet reports, was head-to-toe Fendi: a black fitted midi dress with a lowcut v-neck and a thin waist belt with a tonal “F” logo buckle, which she paired with black court shoes and “the pièce de résistance for fashion fanatics—a longline coat slung over her shoulders featuring contrasting satin lapels, giving the illusion of a tuxedo blazer,” the outlet reports. “Her look was a showcase of elegance, and demonstrated her penchant for looks that are as modern as they are timeless.” (Fendi and Dior menswear share the same creative director by the way—Kim Jones.)

Hello! Fashion has also noticed the York sisters’ interest in fashion, writing that “the princess, much like Beatrice, has gone through a style transformation over recent years, opting for attire that is more clean-cut and fashion-forward, yet still royally appropriate.”

The outlet calls Eugenie’s decision to attend the Dior show in particular “unsurprising,” as “not only is it a royal favorite (by the Duchess of Sussex and Princess Diana, to name a few), but it appears she also has a longstanding relationship with the brand, notabl[y] attending the Dior Sessions book launch in London in 2019.”

All royals have their signature style, and for Eugenie, it’s the midi dress, “and has been since her early days in the spotlight,” Hello! Fashion writes. “But swapping floaty silhouettes for fitted tube dresses and coats casually slung over her shoulders instead of worn properly proves she’s in her cool-girl chic style era. She’s started 2024 as she means to go on and we can’t get enough.”

It has been a busy week for Eugenie—she was in Davos, Switzerland on Tuesday to raise awareness on issues relating to modern slavery, and proud older sister Beatrice was in the audience as her sister took the stage. Eugenie is the co-founder of the Anti-Slavery Collective, Tatler reports, a charity that aims “to eradicate modern slavery for an estimated 50 million people by bringing together changemakers and raising awareness.” She formed the charity in 2017 with her best friend, Julia de Boinville.

During the discussion in Davos, The Guardian reports that Eugenie’s remarks included “We’ve seen in recent years the number of people in slavery increasing around the world,” adding that “guns and drugs can only be trafficked once, but human beings are trafficked again and again and again. For them it happens every day and minute.”

Eugenie is in her moment, professionally and fashion-wise. We love it.

Zayn Malik rocked a new short haircut at Paris Fashion Week more than two months after Harry Styles debuted his shaved head.

The “Pillowtalk” musician — whose attendance at the Kenzo fashion show Friday marked his first public appearance in nearly five years — trimmed the top of his hair and dyed it all black hours after rocking slightly longer blond tresses.

The hairstyle change happened in between his time at the Loewe Men’s Fall/Winter 2024 show and the Valentino Menswear Fall/Winter 2024-2025 show in Paris on Saturday.

Fans were impressed with how seamlessly the British singer switched up his look.

“Zayn changing looks within hours, I’m in love with short hair Zayn 🔥,” tweeted one user.

“Zayn Malik chopping his hair and casually walking out like boy do you even realise how gorgeous you are?” said a third person.

“Left Loewe show to get this new amazing look!! Love any hair cut on him!!” gushed a fourth fan.

With the new haircut, Malik also rocked a classic black suit that featured the words, “We’re so old, we have become young again,” on the front of the tux in white letters.

One of his former One Direction bandmates recently showed off a new haircut as well.

Fans had mixed reactions about Styles’ big chop, with one person tweeting, “how tf are you gonna be named harry styles with no hair to style.”

On the other hand, other users raved over the cut, calling the Grammy winner even “more handsome.”

Best known for winning RuPaul’s Drag Race season 3 and being crowned the “Queen of She Done Already Done Had Herses” in the all-winners season of All Stars 7, Raja a.k.a. Sutan Amrull has just walked their first-ever Paris Fashion Week show.

On Wednesday, Jan. 18, the drag artist walked the LGN Louis Gabriel Nouchi Menswear Fall/Winter 2024-2025 fashion show as part of Paris Fashion Week. Raja wrote in an Instagram post:

“Merci @louisgabrielnouchi (the sweetest visionary) for inviting me to walk my first Paris fashion week. Quite monumental for me and an honor to be part of a celebration of style and inclusivity. Much love to the LGN team for everything.”

Embroiled in a scandal, the social media queen faces criminal charges, sponsor defection and a loss of faith among her 29 million Instagram followers.

What becomes of a famous influencer when followers suddenly drop her by the hundreds of thousands, sponsors start running for the exits and the reputation underpinning all that influence is suddenly derailed?

That question was on a lot of minds during men’s fashion week in Milan, where even excited chatter about a surprise front-row appearance by Jeff Bezos and his girlfriend, Lauren Sánchez, at the Dolce & Gabbana show was quickly overtaken by whispered updates on the weird case of Chiara Ferragni.

As many are aware, Ms. Ferragni is a digital entrepreneur with her own production agency, her own Prime Video series, 29 million Instagram followers and more problems at the moment than the best glow-up can conceal.

By far Italy’s most glamorous and celebrated influencer, Ms. Ferragni, 36, pioneered the business of self-branding and paid posts in Milan, starting as a fashion blogger before shifting her storytelling from documenting designer get-ups and handbags and her tastes in nail art, makeup palettes and drip coffee to tracking every dimension of her personal life.

Following her marriage to the Italian rapper Federico Leonardo Lucia — stage name Fedez — in 2018, she went on to showcase her daily existence minutely across social media. Using a variety of formats and platforms, Ms. Ferragni posted details of her idyllic wedding and subsequent relationship bobbles, including sessions in couples therapy. When she became pregnant, she posted prenatal ultrasounds of her children, Vittoria and Leone, and would later track their growth spurts and elf costumes in so much detail it attracted the attention of child welfare advocates.

She deployed social media to track her husband’s cancer treatment and family ski holidays in the Alps, and she routinely beckoned followers into the closet of a multimillion-dollar penthouse she owns in the luxury CityLife complex in central Milan as well as a retreat they recently constructed near George Clooney’s villa on the shores of Lake Como.

Then, abruptly, in the weeks before Christmas, Ms. Ferragni went dark. The reasons became clear when accusations resurfaced of a charitable giving scam involving her and first reported on in December 2022.

“Italian social media star faces thorny questions over charity cake fraud,” The Financial Times wrote of an investigation by the Milan prosecutor’s office into the sale of a pink-boxed Christmas cake, or pandoro, produced that year by the venerable Balocco bakery conglomerate and branded with Ms. Ferragni’s name. Consumers flocked to buy the traditional cake despite its $10 price tag — more than two and a half times the cost of a normal pandoro — lured by the Ferragni association but also the influencer’s implication on social media posts that money from the sales would be directed toward buying equipment for a children’s cancer hospital.

As it happened, the cause the influencer had earmarked for charity was herself. (The Balocco bakery donated money to the hospital months before the cakes were ever put on sale.) “In reality, Chiara Ferragni earned a million euros for putting her name on the pandoro,” Selvaggia Lucarelli, a journalist who first reported the story in the newspaper Domani, wrote in an email. But in 2022 “the story had limited media resonance,” she said, “because Chiara Ferragni was powerful and untouchable.”

But that was before local officials initiated a criminal investigation into her about aggravated fraud, followed by an Italian consumer rights group bringing a class-action suit. Eventually Ms. Ferragni consented to pay a substantial fine, donating her fee for hosting the annual Sanremo Music Festival, Italy’s most popular television broadcast, for what she termed a “communication error.” Yet, despite the gesture of contrition, she found herself abandoned by major sponsors like Coca-Cola, the eyewear giant Safilo and then by followers in the hundreds of thousands.

When, at last, Ms. Ferragni resurfaced on Instagram after the Christmas holidays, it was to post a distinctly unglamorous mea culpa reel. In it, the social media star appeared starkly deglamorized, wearing scant makeup and dressed in a drab gray shirt resembling prison garb, to issue a public apology and to announce a genuine personal donation, this one a million euros to the Regina Margherita Hospital in Turin, Italy.

Even at that, it took no time for critics to seize on her misjudged optics, noting that the shirt she was wearing sells for 600 euros and is cashmere, and for memes to proliferate poking fun at her wardrobe choices, her no longer exalted status as one half of a glamour couple known as “Ferragnez” and even the family dog.

“Unfortunately, she must have bad people around her and made all the wrong choices,” said Raffaello Napoleone, the chief executive of Pitti Immagine, the Italian fashion and design trade group, before the Neil Barrett men's wear show on Saturday. “When you make an apology, you have to appear as you really are. She appeared as a nun, and she is not a nun.”

It was no help to Ms. Ferragni’s cause that Giorgia Meloni, Italy’s prime minister, took to attacking her in fiery public speeches as an affront to decency, honesty and the very core of “Italianity,” or Italianness. And in that, some saw not only political opportunism (Fedez has been a vocal critic of the right-wing leader), but also “more than a whiff of misogyny,” as one fashion critic noted at the Dsquared show, speaking anonymously in adherence with her publication’s employment guidelines.

“Yes, she overstepped, as maybe all the influencers overstep by becoming gurus,” the critic added. “But the woman-on-woman attack feeds into a prevailing anti-feminist rhetoric.”

Whether that is so, there is no doubting the pass-along effects Ms. Ferragni’s missteps have had on what Rupert Younger, the director of the Center for Corporate Reputation at the University of Oxford, termed in The Financial Times as “reputational risk.”

Consider that, despite deep seasonal discounts posted on the shiny branded goods that fill the racks and windows of the slick Ferragni store near Corso Como this busy past weekend, there was barely a shopper to be seen. No one around was spotted toting one of Chiara Ferragni’s signature bags with their logo of an oversize eye.

The scene was similar at the Ferragni outpost in Rome, according to a report in La Repubblica, Italy’s largest newspaper. Gawkers stopped to gape at the windows. Then they walked right past.

“The criminal charges are not the most important part of the story,” Ms. Lucarelli, the journalist, said. “They might lead to nothing.” What is important to watch, she said, is what happens after a powerful influencer’s reputation falters and with it the “adoration of her followers, who felt betrayed.”

What, in other words, is left to sell once you’ve sold out?
