It’s quite pointless to make a serious monster movie. Knowing this, director Jon Turteltaub (National Treasure) presents The Meg with earnest-looking leads – Jason Statham and Li Bingbing – with somewhat fun and thrilling elements.
Or at least it looks so judging from the trailer.
The Meg is about a massive shark known as the Megalodon that attacks a deep-sea submersible. That’s not all. There’s also a giant octopus.
The submersible houses an international crew observing the deep sea life. They, however, realise a tad too late that a pre-historic 22m-long shark has been hibernating on the seabed of the Pacific ocean. Awake (and presumably hungry), it attacks the submersible causing cracks in the impenetrable glass. Now it’s only a matter of time before the whole base falls apart.
Expert deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor has to do everything to bring everyone from the deep sea location safely above sea level.
Can he do it? Will the Jaws theme be playing in the background? Will Meg Ryan make an appearance?
The Meg is based on the best-selling novel by Steve Alten, and it co-stars Winston Chao, Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose, Cliff Curtis and Masi Oka.
