Enter Alexandra Bracken’s ‘The Darkest Minds’

Teens sure have it tough in movies and Young Adult (YA) novels. The latest misfortune youngsters experience takes place in The Darkest Minds, a film based on the novel by Alexandra Bracken.

It tells of a time when a disease has killed 98% of children in the United States. The remaining 2% has developed superpowers. Adults in charge are scared of these “mutants”, so they’ve started internment camps.

The story kicks off when a 16-year-old girl escapes her camp and joins a group of other teens on the run. The plot does sound like something out of an X-Men film, but the vibe from the trailer is very much like those films based on YA novels.

Here’s hoping The Darkest Minds can rise above the standards of X-Men movies, instead of following the tried-and-tested formula. Starring Mandy Moore, Gwendoline Christie, Amandla Stenberg and Harris Dickinson.
