All 17-year-old Katie Price (Bella Thorne) wants is the chance to feel the warmth of the sun on her skin. However, Katie is confined to her home due to a rare genetic condition that makes her highly sensitive to sunlight.
The slightest exposure could kill her. Then she meets and falls in love with Charlie (Patrick Schwarzenegger) who dreams of taking her sailing in the ocean.
Will love help Katie overcome her disease? The short answer is nope. But love finds a way to breathe a sense of much-needed wonder into Katie’s tragic life.
Midnight Sun has the makings of a watchable romantic teen drama – a good-looking cast, elaborate declarations of love that make your eyes roll and a cool parent who makes it all happen. However, the movie loses out on some emotional aspect thanks to Schwarzenegger’s lack of facial expression.
Thankfully, we can rely on the touching relationship between Katie and her father (Rob Riggle) for those much-needed touching moments. The best scene in the film is when Katie prepares her widowed dad for a life without her. Sniff.
The movie makes a brilliant point to tell you that it’s important to move on and continue to embrace life.
There’s definitely a lot of hugging going on in this movie.
