The film festival runs from March 7 to 11 in Kuala Lumpur (GSC Pavilion KL and Mid Valley); March 12 to 14 in Penang (GSC Gurney Plaza) and March 15 to 17 in Johor Baru (GSC Paradigm JB).

It is organised by the Cultural Centre of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Malaysia and GSC, and supported by Farabi Film Foundation, Hoze Honari Organization and the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas).

The six movies showing at the film festival are selected from the best of Iranian cinema, including Under The Smoky Roof that bagged last year’s Crystal Simorgh Award for Best Actress In A Leading Role at the Fajr Film Festival in Tehran.

Directed by Pooran Derakhshandeh, this drama charts the challenges faced by one woman desperately trying to hold together a family that is slowly but surely coming apart at the seams.

Ceasefire 2.

Aside from offering cinema-goers a glimpse into Iranian culture and values, this year’s film selection is also curated with variety in mind, so there is comedy, thriller, romance and drama, as well as a war movie which is told from “an unusual perspective” for its genre.

“We hope that the Iranian Film Festival this year is the first of many to come. A long-term cooperation with cinema-goers and the cinema industry here will encourage an exchange of experiences, ideas and culture.

“May the film festival mark the beginning of this partnership between Iran and Malaysia, two nations that have a lot in common with each other,” says A.M. Sabeghi, the cultural counselor of Iranian Embassy’s Cultural Centre and the secretary of the Iranian Film Festival 2018.
