Shemar Moore does 500 sit ups a day, 5 times a week

Being a series regular on police procedural Criminal Minds for 11 years has taken a toll on Shemar Moore’s personal life. “I wanted to legitimately date somebody without the complications and the tension of schedule. The hours are tough and it’s tough to make time for each other. It’s hard on relationships,” the actor tells USA Today.

Moore quit the show in 2016 without a job offer in sight. He probably didn’t get to do a whole lot of dating, as Moore signed on to another law enforcement TV project S.W.A.T. the following year.

For the first time in his 24-year acting career, Moore is finally playing the leading man, and you’ve guessed it, he has even less time for romance. “I literally have time for nothing else, zero. I couldn’t date anybody. I make time to walk my dogs,” he says.

S.W.A.T., based on the 1975 series and 2003 movie of the same name, sees Sergeant Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson (Moore) running a specialised tactical unit in Los Angeles. The actor packed on about four to five kg of muscle to prepare for the role. “I do about 500 sit ups a day, five days a week,” Moore shares the secret to his eight-pack abs on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.

“I’m 47 years old but the character I play on S.W.A.T. is 35 so I ain’t gonna lie, I gotta pain some greys, I gotta hold my breath a lot more than I used to. I wanna see if I can get to 60 with somewhat of a three, four-pack.”

S.W.A.T. airs every Friday at 9.05pm on Fox HD (Astro Ch 724).
