The year 2017 has been an eventful one. We round up the top entertainment news and happenings with these emojis.

Shocking twist

Moonlight

And the Oscar for Best Picture goes to … La La Land! No, wait, it’s actually Moonlight! Yes, who can forget the moment the world let out a collective gasp when the wrong film was initially announced as Best Picture at the Oscars.

Drawing ire

Harvey Weinstein

The New York Times published an article which highlighted the various sexual harassment allegations made against film mogul Harvey Weinstein. It proved to be a deep-seated problem in the entertainment industry as a long list of high profile men such as actor Kevin Spacey, X-Men director Bryan Singer, TV journalist Charlie Rose and Transparent actor Jeffery Tambor were also subsequently accused of sexual assault.

Love is in the air

The hottest celebrity union of the year goes to Fattah Amin and Fazura, or Fattzura. After months of speculation, the couple finally announced they were in a relationship and were engaged to be married. A few days after the announcement, they tied the knot in a private ceremony.

Other celebrity weddings include Izara Aishah and businessman Adib Khalid, Siti Saleha and government officer Ahmad Lutfi, Juliana Evans and Tengku Shariffuddin Shah Tengku Sulaiman Shah Al-Hajj, a member of the Selangor and Johor royal family.

Speaking of royalty, Prince Harry also announced his engagement to Suits actress Meghan Markle. The couple is set to marry in May next year.

Sad news

kim jong hyun

We lost a number of significant entertainment figures this year. Locally, Malaysia’s James Bond Tan Sri Jins Shamsuddin, who starred in Bukit Kepong, died at 81.

Internationally, Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell, Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington and most recently, SHINee’s Jonghyun also died.

All three musicians, who had been battling depression, took their own lives.

At the top of their game

henry golding

Malaysians have been going places. Our very own Henry Golding was picked to lead the cast of Crazy Rich Asians, acting opposite Constance Wu and Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh. Just a few months later, the first-time actor scored a lead role in his second Hollywood production, A Simple Favor, starring opposite Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick.

Pop star-turned-actor Jack Tan also did us proud when he won Best Actor at the Shanghai International Film Festival for his performance in Shuttle Life, besides picking up two other Best Actor wins at the 12th Chinese Young Generation Film Forum Awards in China and the Asean-China Film Festival 2017 in Putrajaya.

Singer-songwriter Yuna made history when she became the first Malaysian to earn a nomination at the Black Entertainment Awards (BET) for her hit single, Crush (feat. Usher)

Filmmaker Edmund Yeo also scored another first, when he became the first Malaysian to win Best Director at the Tokyo International Film Festival for his work Aqerat.

Burn baby burn

taylor swift

Some celebs couldn’t resist and threw a few major shades, essentially a subtle way of insulting someone, at each other this year.

At the MTV VMA awards, when girl group Fifth Harmony first took the stage to perform their singles Angel and Down, five members appeared on a raised platform. Seconds later, its fifth member fell off the platform and into oblivion, throwing shade at former member Camila Cabello who exited the group last year.

Then there’s Taylor Swift who released what sounds like a diss track, Look What You Made Me Do, meant for her detractors, which range from Kanye West to Katy Perry. In it, Swift sings about being lied to by her nemesis and outsmarting them.

Datuk Seri Vida

Dancing queen

One of the catchiest tunes of the year was performed by beauty entrepreneur Datuk Seri Vida. Vida sang and danced her way to many hearts with the original song, I Am Me. Its lyric video has fetched 10 million views on YouTube so far. Following the song’s success, other beauty entrepreneurs Datuk Seri Aliff Syukri and Nur Sajat followed suit and released their own catchy, danceable tunes.

Starstruck in Kuala Lumpur

Ansel Elgort

Thousands flooded Bukit Bintang to see popular South Korean actors Song Joong-ki, So Ji-sub and Hwang Jung-min in Kuala Lumpur, who were here to promote historical war film The Battleship Island (pic). Another South Korean heartthrob Ji Chang-wook also set hearts aflutter when he was in town to promote action thriller Fabricated City.

Baby Driver stars Ansel Elgort, Lily James and its director Edgar Wright came down to KL and got us all excited. Elgort showed he was one of us when he tried some durian and loved it!

Malaysians were also really into singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran who performed to a sold-out crowd at Bukit Jalil. The 12,000 tickets to his show were snapped up within 30 minutes.

We got a taste of Bollywood too when the glamorous Kareena Kapoor launched a juice store in Bangsar.

And who can forget that time when Kajol and Tamil superstar Dhanush promoted film Velaiilla Pattadhari 2 in KL.
