Mandopop diva G.E.M. thrills Malaysian fans at her Queen Of Hearts World Tour

There is no doubt that Mandopop diva G.E.M. absolutely rules the stage.

Malaysian fans went wild the moment she emerged on stage at the Kuala Lumpur leg of her Queen Of Hearts World Tour at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil on Saturday night.

Adoring fans sang along while waving colourful glowsticks, stopping only to chant her name Tang Tsz Kei, and profess their love for the queen of their hearts.

The Shanghai-born Hong Kong-bred singer-songwriter reciprocated with: “I love Malaysia. Hearing your voices makes me feel so blessed. You cannot imagine how beautiful it is for me to see all of you from where I am standing on this stage.

“It is like looking at a sky full of twinkling stars in outer space,” cooed the comely lass, dubbed the “Young Diva With Giant Lungs” for her vocal range and powerhouse style.

Opening her show with A.I.N.Y. and What Have You Done, she continued with a succession of popular romantic ballads.

Fans lapped it all up when she belted out Mayday’s Behind The Mask, Wang Feng’s Survive, Shin Band’s Infinite Love, Jay Chou’s Tornado, David Huang’s Intoxicated and Beyond’s Loving You.

Although she has over 30 releases under her belt including four studio albums, G.E.M.’s setlist included all these crowd favourite covers of Mandorock hits.

It appears the doe-eyed songstress still loves the format of a reality show of singing covers. She shot to fame in China after taking part in the second season of the reality singing competition I Am A Singer in 2014.

She had the crowd eating out of her hands with movie theme songs like Light Years Away (the Mandarin theme song for Hollywood sci-fi movie Passengers), See You Never (The Continent) as well as Red Rose White Rose (the Mandarin version of K-pop star Taeyang’s Eyes Nose Lips).

The singer hardly left the stage in the three-hour-long show, but somehow managed almost a dozen costume changes, some done right in front of the audience. She also played the piano, drums and guitar.

Fans were already on their feet dancing to the beat when she ended her show with See You Again and Get Everybody Moving.

Then to appease her appreciative audience, she returned for a double encore, bringing with her a surprise guest, Malaysian artiste Namewee.

Namewee joins G.E.M. on stage to sing Stranger In The North, the former’s duet with Wang Leehom.

The first guest to perform at her Queen Of Hearts tour, the Malaysian singer-songwriter and filmmaker is also gearing up for his own Namewee 4896 World Tour which kicks off in Taipei on Nov 25.

After sharing a bear hug, G.E.M. and Namewee revisited their much-talked about KTV duet Stranger In The North. The song was originally recorded by Wang Leehom and Namewee, who also composed the song.

Ever the joker, Namewee teased G.E.M. about her love for durians and invited her to join him for supper at the popular Jalan Alor foodie street.

So, she happily wrapped her show with Ali AhKao Dan Muthu, Namewee’s patriotic theme which he wrote to commemorate Malaysia’s National Day celebration recently.

Ending her concert on a high note, G.E.M. again thanked her fans: “I am so grateful for all your love and support.

“Because of you, my music is taking me to so many places!”
