A biographical stage musical focused on the story and music of the Bee Gees is being developed with surviving member Barry Gibb, according to an announcement by Universal Theatrical Group.
Brother Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb formed the Bee Gees in 1958. They rose to fame in the 1960s and 1970s and are behind hits such as How Can You Mend A Broken Heart, Night Fever and Stayin’ Alive, all of which appeared on their soundtrack for the 1977 film Saturday Night Fever.
Born in England, the brothers later moved with their parents to Australia, where they achieved their first chart success, and later came back to the UK as their worldwide careers took off. Earlier this year, A-list artistes including Celine Dion, John Legend, Ed Sheeran and Stevie Wonder paid tribute to the group in a Grammy-organised tribute concert to mark the 40th anniversary of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.
Barry Gibb will serve as executive producer on the new project telling the band’s story, working alongside the widows of his late brothers.“It’s another adventure for us and a chance to throw the spotlight on all my brothers and finally the real story of us will be told,” said Barry Gibb of the project.
No futher details of the project are available for now, but by the time the Bee Gees musical hits the stage, it will likely be joining a crowded field of bio-musicals. Among then, Cher recently announced she’ll be telling her life story in The Cher Show, a musical slated to hit Broadway next year, while a Tina Turner bio-musical is expected to hit London’s West End next spring. – AFP
