Trailer Watch: Marvel’s Black Panther bares his claws

Thor Ragnarok hasn’t even opened in cinemas yet, but we’re already looking forward to the next movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Black Panther, which opens next February, released its latest trailer on Oct 16, and it’s got us really excited about the movie. It stars Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, otherwise known as the superhero named Black Panther, whom we first saw in last year’s Captain America: Civil War,

After the death of his father in Civil War, T’Challa is now king of the secretive African nation of Wakanda. As he comes to terms of being the ruler of his nation, he also has to deal with an insurgence by Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), an exiled Wakandan who opposes T’Challa’s rule. Killmonger is also a prominent Black Panther villain from the comics.

The trailer opens with Martin Freeman’s Everett K. Ross asking T’Challa, “What else are you hiding?”.

And the answer, as the trailer shows us, is A LOT.

From the technological gleam of the futuristic nation of Wakanda to sweeping, epic landscapes, there is a lot to marvel at in the trailer. But the best parts come when T’Challa is featured front and centre, as it should be.

Boseman exudes a regal aura that befits the royal nature of the character he is portraying, but still appears suitably vulnerable at times, especially during the quieter moments of the trailer.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Marvel superhero film without some glorious action. The money shots here come from a car chase scene featuring T’Challa jumping from car to car before ripping a tyre off one with his BARE HANDS. OK, they’re not bare, and he used the vibranium claws from his Black Panther suit, but it’s still one heck of a cool move.

Black Panther is directed by Ryan Coogler, and also stars Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker and Andy Serkis.
