What is Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets?

Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets is based on a long-running French comics called Valérian Et Laureline. It made its debut in 1967 in Pilote magazine.

The comics ran for 21 volumes, with the final copy published in 2010. Said to be years ahead of its time, the comics’ narrative influences are apparent in films like Star Wars and Avatar.

Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets is directed by Luc Besson, whose 1997 film The Fifth Element was actually inspired by Valérian Et Laureline. The film stars actor Dane Dehaan as Valerian and model Cara Delevingne as Laureline.

From the trailer, it looks like Besson spent a lot of time time creating this complicated world. Set in the year 2740, it follows the adventures of two special operatives in charge of safeguarding the universe, which includes an intergalactic city of Alpha.

In Alpha, there are thousands of different species from all over the galaxy residing in this metropolis. An evil threat is bent on destroying Alpha (also known as the City Of A Thousand Planets), and it is up to Valerian and Laureline to stop this from happening.

Clive Owen, Rihanna, Kris Wu, John Goodman and Ethan Hawke also start in the film.

Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets is scheduled to open in Malaysia on July 20.
