Are these G-Dragon’s craziest, coolest haircuts?

Korean pop icon G-Dragon’s studio recording Kwon Ji Yong (his real name) was released in the form of a USB flash drive recently. However, it was rejected by South Korea’s Goan Music Chart as “an album”. The star fired back on Instagram, saying: “What’s the problem?”

The singer-rapper always has something different to offer – not only in the way in which he publishes his music, but also the way he dresses and his ever-changing hairstyle.

The BigBang leader and producer, who is currently on his solo world tour, is dubbed “a natural style chameleon” by fans for his flamboyant, androgynous and somewhat experimental fashion. Some find his style hip and inspiring, while others say it’s quirky and far too OTT.

Whatever you call it, here are some of the most talked about hairstyles throughout his career:

Heartbreaker blonde

To go with the concept of his debut solo album Heartbreaker, released in 2009, G-Dragon transformed his boyish look to a brand new futuristic look, sporting blonde hair, heavy black eyeliner, vampire-white skin, sci-fi sunglasses and unisex outfits.

The record, which sold 200,000 copies, is the best-selling by a South Korean solo artist. It also won the musician Album of the Year at the Mnet Asian Music Awards and the Melon Music Awards. His blonde look was one of the most popular hairstyles of the year in South Korea.

One Of A Kind dreadlocks

In 2012, G-Dragon released his critically acclaimed second solo record One Of A Kind. The single of the same title is heavily influenced by hip-hop culture.

In the music video, as well as his live performance, the singer sports a head wrap, baseball cap, oversized logo T-shirt, tiger print pants, Chrome Hearts jewellery and studded accessories – but it’s the golden yellow dreadlocks that made the entire look one of a kind.

Crayon

In the kaleidoscopic music video of the single Crayon, also from the One of a Kind album, the star plays around with striking colours, from shocking pink, to pop orange and neon yellow in larger-than-life outfits from designers like Raf Simons and Thom Browne. The most head-turning feature is his multicoloured “cotton candy” hair.

Fantastic Baby “seaweed”

This has become one of the most iconic looks from the fashionista, which first appeared in Big Bang’s Fantastic Baby music video in 2012. Some people named this asymmetrical, half-shaved, half-long and dyed hairstyle “seaweed”.

In live shows where he performed the song, the star dyed his “seaweed” hair into a variety of colours, such as blue, green and pink. Many Korean variety shows mocked the hairstyle.

Sushi

At the 2013 Mnet Asian Music Awards held in Hong Kong, G-Dragon shocked everyone with a centre part blonde short haircut.

It was widely recognised as the worst hairstyle the star ever had. Fans named it “sushi hair” as it looks like a piece of tamagoyaki sushi.

Cruella de Vil

G-Dragon sported black and white long hair at the Gaon Music Awards in 2013. It was probably inspired by Cruella de Vil, an evil character in Disney’s 101 Dalmatians.

The star later tried a shorter version, which was much funkier than the long creepy one, and experimented with colour combinations like green and red, and black and pink.

Michi-Go wigs

Michi-Go means “Go Crazy” in Korean and is Kwon’s single released in 2013. He wears wigs from frizzy, to afro and bowl cut for several looks in the playful video.

In the schoolboy look, the singer dressed up in a brown frizzy wig, paired with a baseball cap, nerdy black frame glasses, sweater and school backpack. What do you think? – South China Morning Post/Style/Lee Wing-Sze
