Here are some movies to catch in February

We’re still halfway through the Chinese New Year season, but don’t worry, there are lots of non-CNY movies coming up in the cinenas.

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, romantics can check out Taiwanese romance flick 52Hz, I Love You (Feb 9), while there are some big sequels on the way with John Wick: Chapter 2 and Rings (both also Feb 9).

And as Oscar season is already underway, there are two Best Picture nominees to catch this month: Hacksaw Ridge (Feb 16) and Hidden Figures (Feb 23).

Oh, there’s also the year’s most anticipated superhero movie … The Lego Batman Movie (Feb 9)!

52Hz, I Love You (Feb 9)

Cast: Lin Chung-Yu, Chuang Chuan-Ying, Suming Rupi, Mify Chen

Director: Te-Sheng Wei

A musical omnibus of love stories set in modern Taipei on Valentine’s Day. The title refers to the “52Hz whale”, dubbed the world’s loneliest whale because no other whales could hear its unusually high frequency call.

Why you should watch it:

Well, it’s almost Valentine’s Day, isn’t it? What could be better than a romance flick by the director who brought us the incredibly moving and inspiring Cape No. 7?

The Lego Batman Movie (Feb 9)

Cast: Will Arnett, Michael Cera, Zach Galifianakis, Rosario Dawson, Ralph Fiennes

Director: Chris McKay

It’s Batman, in Lego form, joined by Lego Robin, Lego Batgirl and featuring Lego Joker. Come on, do you really need to know the story?

Why you should watch it:

It’s Batman, in Lego form, joined by Lego Robin, Lego Batgirl and featuring Lego Joker. Come on, do you really need another reason to watch this?

Rings (Feb 9)

Cast: Matilda Lutz, Alex Roe, David Dorfman, Johnny Galecki, Aimee Teegarden

Director: F. Javier Gutiérrez

No, this is not a movie about marriage or weddings or anything remotely close to anything about putting a ring on it. It’s about this young girl called Samara who keeps crawling out from TVs and killing people, and she’s back to kill more people.

Why you should watch it:

Well, it’s a sequel to the Hollywood version of The Ring, and after the whole Sadako Vs Kayako debacle from Japan last year, Sadako, er, I mean, Samara could use a good comeback.

John Wick: Chapter Two (Feb 9)

Cast: Keanu Reeves, Common, Laurence Fishburne, Riccardo Scamarcio

Director: Chad Stahelski

The assassin you hire to kill other assassins is back, forced out of retirement by a former partner, who wants to take control of an international assassin network.

Why you should watch it:

The first one was a solid action flick with Keanu Reeves in his most badass role since The Matrix, and this one should be more of the same as well.

Hacksaw Ridge (Feb 9)

Cast: Andrew Garfield, Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer, Hugo Weaving

Director: Mel Gibson

The true story of American combat medic Desmond Doss, who saved 75 men during the Battle of Okinawa in World War II, without firing a shot, and the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a firearm or weapons of any kind.

Why you should watch it:

Well, it was nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director for Mel Gibson, and Best Actor for Andrew Garfield. If that’s not a good enough reason to watch this, we don’t know what is.

Cook Up A Storm (Feb 10)

Cast: Nicholas Tse, Jung Yong-Hwa, Tiffany Tang, Michelle Wai

Director: Raymond Yip Wai Man

Inspired by Nicholas Tse’s real life, this film stars Tse as a cook in an ordinary Chinese street restaurant who takes on a French-trained Michelin-starred chef in a culinary competition.

Why you should watch it:

The theme itself is mouth-watering enough, but the trailer serves up a delectable feast for the eyes that is guaranteed to get our stomachs growling. Besides, there’s nothing Malaysians love more than food, and comparing our favourite humble street hawker food with expensive restaurants.

Sleepless (Feb 16)

Cast: Jamie Foxx, Gabrielle Union, Lloyd Banks, Drew Sidora

Director: Baran bo Odar

An undercover Las Vegas police officer finds himself caught in a spot of bother when his son is kidnapped and he has to race against time to save him while battling corrupt cops and gangsters.

Why you should watch it:

The story sounds like a combination of Street Kings and Taken, with Jamie Foxx in a badass cop role. Sounds pretty cool to us.

Hidden Figures (Feb 23)

Cast: Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe, Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst

Director: Theodore Melfi

The story of three female African-American mathematicians whose precise calculations were instrumental in Nasa successfully launching the first American astronaut to make a complete orbit of Earth.

Why you should watch it:

It’s another highly acclaimed film that was nominated for three Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress for Octavia Spencer.
