Sorry Justin Bieber, Malaysians prefer these boys

Malaysians seem to love The Chainsmokers as it is the No. 1 streamed artiste of 2016 in the country according to Spotify. The DJ duo – comprising Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall – beat Justin Bieber for the top spot.

The Chainsmokers’ hits Don’t Let Me Down and Closer are also the No. 2 and No. 5 most streamed songs respectively. The top spot is taken up by Alan Walker’s Faded.

Love Yourself by Justin Bieber and We Don’t Talk Anymore by Charlie Puth featuring Selena Gomez are at positions No. 3 and No. 4.

It is interesting to note that the Top 5 most streamed artistes in Malaysia are all male singers – The Chainsmokers, Justin Bieber, Coldplay, Charlie Puth and Shawn Mendes. No girl power here.

Ariana Grande holds the title as the most streamed female artiste in Malaysia, followed by Adele, Sia, Rihanna and Selena Gomez.

On the global scale, Drake dominated the streaming service for a second year in a row as the most-listened to artiste. He clocked 4.7 billion streams, more than doubled his record of 1.8 billion streams last year.

“Drake has been unstoppable this year – he’s a true global superstar,” said Stefan Blom, Spotify’s chief content and chief strategy officer, in a press statement.

“With the top album and the top song this year, as well as his successful Summer Sixteen tour, Drake continues to engage his fans in a way that only Drake can; it’s no surprise he is dominating the music industry.”
