After a two year hiatus, Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM) – the country’s awards show to honour excellence in the local music industry – is set to return on Dec 18.
This year’s event sees pop diva Datuk Siti Nurhaliza dominating the awards with seven nominations. Siti’s performance in the song Menatap Dalam Mimpi will see her competing against the likes of Dayang Nurfaizah (Lelaki Teragung), Jaclyn Victor (Seindah Mimpi), Najwa Mahiaddin (Guilty Room) and Nona (Takkan Biarkan) in the category for Best Female Vocal Performance In A Song.
During an event to announce the Top 5 nominations in Kuala Lumpur, Siti shared what happened when she tried to record Menatap Dalam Mimpi.
“It was written especially for my late father (who died in 2009). When I was recording the song, I started missing him and I got so carried away by the emotion that it affected my focus. If anything, that moment gave me the feel I needed to record the song,” she said.
Menatap Dalam Mimpi, composed by Aubrey Suwito with lyrics by Rozisangdewi, also received a nomination for Best Pop Song. Other nominees in the category are Assalamualaikum (Faizal Tahir), Sedetik Lara (Hazama), Sejati (Faizal Tahir) and Hidup Dalam Mimpi (Syamel).
Siti’s other nominations are for Best Engineered Album (Datuk Siti Nurhaliza Unplugged), Best Nasyid Song (Mikraj Cinta), Best Musical Arrangement In A Song (Jaga Dia Untukku and Menatap Dalam Mimpi) and Best Album (Datuk Siti Nurhaliza Unplugged).
Singer-songwriter Faizal received five nominations. His performance in the song Sejati will see him go up against Akim Ahmad (Potret), Hazama (Sampai Mati), Hazami (Cintai Dia) and Lah Ahmad (Syukur) in the Best Male Vocal Peformance In A Song category.
In the Best Duo/Collaboration Vocal Performance In A Song category, Faizal’s duet with Elizabeth Tan for Setia is nominated alongside Go Hard Or Gostan (Hunny Madu and Kayda), Terimaku Seadanya (Misha Omar and Hafiz Suip), After The Rain (Najwa Mahiaddin feat Juny) and Go Do That (SonaOne feat Joe Flizzow and Akeem).
Akademi Fantasia runner-up Syamel will be competing in the Best New Artiste category (alongside De Fam, Bella Nazari, Lyia Meta and Projector Band) and Best Pop Song (as the composer and songwriter for Hidup Dalam Mati). As a newcomer, Syamel is simply grateful for the chance to call himself an AIM nominee: “It’s unbelievable. I grew up watching AIM. Now, getting a nomination and having the chance to perform feels like a dream come true.”
The AIM awards night, to be held at Putra World Trade Centre in KL, will see winners in 16 main categories. Awards will also be presented to winners in five new popularity-driven categories namely Most Downloaded Song Of The Year, Most Streamed Song Of The Year, Most Viewed Official Music Video on YouTube and Best Malaysian Singer.
