Ola Bola scores 14 nominations at Malaysia Film Festival

Inspirational sports-themed film Ola Bola received 14 nominations at the 28th edition of Malaysia Film Festival (FFM).

The event to honour excellence in the local filmmaking industry presented Ola Bola with nominations like Best Non-Bahasa Malaysia Film, Best Original Story, Best Screenplay for Non-Bahasa Malaysia Film, Best Costume, Best Editing, Best Original Score, Best Theme Song, Best Art Direction and Best Visual Effects.

Stars Marianne Tan and Saran Kumar are nominated in the Best New Actress and Actor categories, respectively.

Director Chiu Keng Guan received a nomination for Best Director for Non-Bahasa Malaysia Film. He will compete against Shanjhey Kumar Perumal (Jagat), Jess Teong (The Kid From Big Apple), Silver/Yee Kwan Wah (Huat The Fish) and Puvanendran Selveraja (Maravan) in this category.

Best Screenplay for Non-Bahasa Malaysia Film and Best Director for Non-Bahasa Malaysia Film are two new categories introduced by the organiser, National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas), for this year’s edition of FFM. Other nominees in the Best Screenplay for Non-Bahasa Malaysia Film are The Kid From Big Apple, Jagat, Huat The Fish and Maravan.

Action-comedy Polis Evo received 10 nominations including Best Film and Best Director for Ghaz Abu Bakar.

Other nominees for Best Film include road drama Mat Moto – Kami Mat Moto Bukan Mat Rempit, coming-of-age film Jejak Warriors, religious-horror offering Munafik and psychological thriller Nota.

Polis Evo stars Shaheizy Sam and Zizan Razak are both nominated in the Best Actor category. Also nominated are Rembat actor Aniu, Aaron Aziz (Suamiku Encik Perfect 10!) and Pekin Ibrahim (Mat Moto – Kami Mat Moto Bukan Mat Rempit).

Maya Karin received a double nomination in the Best Actress category for her roles in Nota and horror movie Jwanita. Her competition in this category are Nabila Huda (Munafik), Lisa Surihani (Suamiku Encik Perfect 10!) and Nadiya Nisaa (Love Supermoon).

Other major film nominees include Munafik, Tamil drama Jagat and Mandarin feel-good movie The Kid From Big Apple with nine each.

Trophies will be presented to winners in 31 categories which also include Best New Director, Best Child Actor, Best Supporting Actor/Actress and Box Office Film Award.
