Review: Obsessed by Dan + Shay

If you like Rascal Flatts, you’ll probably like Dan + Shay too.

For one, its lead vocalist Shay Mooney has a voice that bears a striking resemblance to Rascal Flatts’ Gary LeVox, only less nasal.

The male country duo, comprising Dan Smyers and Shay, has a new single, From The Ground Up, off its sophomore effort Obsessed, which also reminds me a lot of Rascal Flatts’ propensity for inspirational anthems.

The warm ballad is about a young couple committing to love each other for the rest of their lives, inspired by their grandparents’ life-long love story. The duo’s harmonies are irresistible and I love Shay’s runs towards the end of the song. I’m not surprised if this one becomes a wedding music staple. Other tender, wholesome love songs include Lately and Sway, albeit a bit more uptempo.

Lipstick is another gem, shedding light on a girl trying to pick up the pieces, getting herself ready to go on a date, after a terrible break-up.

Still, Obsessed, for the most part, features a lineup of light, bouncy country-pop tracks which listeners got a taste of back on the duo’s 2014 debut album.

All Nighter and Road Trippin’ exudes all the sprightliness that comes with being young and carefree. Round The Clock and quite a number of other tracks on the album actually, boast a catchy, toe-tapping chorus that could cross over well to pop radio.
