We don’t need the Lasso Of Truth to find out why Warner Bros’ live-action Wonder Woman needed a female director.

Many have decried the lack of women directing Hollywood blockbusters in general, but for Wonder Woman in particular, it was especially “important” to have a woman at the helm, said star Gal Gadot. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gadot explained her experience with director Patty Jenkins on the set of Wonder Woman, which just recently wrapped shooting.

“All my life I’ve been working with male directors which I’ve really enjoyed,” she said.

“And I’m lucky in that I’ve worked with men who have a lot of respect for women. But working with a woman is a different experience. It feels like the communication is different. We talk about emotions. With Patty, it’s a thing now, we communicate with our eyes. She doesn’t need to say a thing. If I’m hurt, she feels the pain. It’s a whole different connection that I have with her. She’s also brilliant, she’s bright, she’s fierce, she’s sharp. She knows exactly what she wants Wonder Woman to be.”

Gadot added, “It’s a story about a girl becoming a woman. I think only a woman, who has been a girl, can be able to tell the story in the right way.” Michelle MacLaren was originally set to direct the installment in WB’s DC Comics cinematic universe, but dropped out last year over creative differences. Jenkins is best known for directing Monster, which won Charlize Theron an Oscar.

While Batman and Superman have received countless iterations over the years, it’s taken decades for the Amazon Princess to hit the big screen. But according to Gadot, audiences should find Diana Prince to be relatable in her first live-action feature.

“It’s very easy to relate to her,” Gadot said. “She has the heart of a human so she can be emotional, she’s curious, she’s compassionate, she loves people. And then she has the powers of a goddess. She’s all for good, she fights for good, she believes in great. I want to be her. And in Wonder Woman, she has this naivete in her. It isn’t stupid, it’s magical. I would want to be naive like that again.”

Fans will hopefully get more Wonder Woman details later this July, as Warner Bros. has revealed that the movie will be part of its San Diego Comic-Con event. Wonder Woman hits theaters on June 2, 2017 in the US. – Reuters/Alex Stedman
