Actor Paul Rudd didn’t know why Selena Gomez was so famous

Netflix’s dark comedy The Fundamentals Of Caring follows a downhearted writer (Paul Rudd) who becomes the caregiver of a sarcastic teen suffering from muscular dystrophy (Craig Roberts).

Based on a 2013 novel by Jonathan Evison, the film stands as the second feature directing effort of Late Show With David Letterman veteran Rob Burnett. Selena Gomez, Bobby Cannavale and Megan Ferguson also star.

“Anybody that can write this kind of material with this many laughs understands the nature of how to tell this kind of story-to play against all the somber stuff and focus on the gallows humour and lightness of it,” said Rudd, praising Burnett.

The actor also discussed working with popstar Gomez, admitting that the full extent of her fame didn’t dawn on him until the start of production.

“I’m so out of touch,” Rudd confessed, “It wasn’t until we were filming and I saw thousands of people turning out to try and see her that I realised what a phenomenon she is.To see her deal with that kind of fame, I came away even more impressed with her. She’s extraordinary.”

Burnett also spoke of Gomez’s acting abilities, commenting that the singer-actress is “only at the beginning of her talents”.
