James Wan to direct 1st MacGyver reboot series

James Wan is set to direct the premiere episode of CBS’ MacGyver reboot.

An executive producer on the series, Wan had originally been set to direct the pilot, but had to back away from it because of his feature film schedule. Since the show was picked up to series, CBS decided to scrap the original pilot and shoot a new premiere episode, retaining Lucas Till and George Eads from the original pilot but otherwise adding an entirely new cast.

Recently, Rush Hour star Justin Hires was added to the cast. A window in Wan’s schedule will allow him to direct the new premiere.

Wan, a fan of the original MacGyver, had been in talks with New Line as far back as 2012 about directing a feature film based on the series. His most revent feature, The Conjuring 2, is dominating at the box office, opening to US$40.4mil. New Line has also revealed that it is working on a Conjuring 2 spinoff, The Nun, with Wan set to produce and a new director to take the helm.

Wan is also set to direct the Aquaman feature film for Warner Bros.

MacGyver, starring Lucas Till, is produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Lionsgate. The series is a reboot of the original MacGyver, which aired from 1985 to 1992 and starred Richard Dean Anderson as a member of a US government clandestine organisation who uses his problem-solving talents to save lives. – Reuters/Daniel Holloway
