Riverdale, where Archie and friends live, might be coming to TV soon

The CW has ordered three new series for the 2016-17 season, in addition to picking up Supergirl from CBS for S2 and renewing almost the entirety of their 2015-16 lineup.

Riverdale hails from Warner Bros Television and Supergirl and The Flash executive producer Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions. Set in the present day and based on the iconic Archie Comics characters, Riverdale is described as a surprising and subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, and their friends, exploring the surrealism of small town life – the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome facade.

The cast includes Lili Reinhart (Surviving Jack), Cole Sprouse (The Suite Life Of Zack & Cody), Luke Perry (Beverly Hills, 90210), KJ Apa (Shortland Street), Marisol Nichols (GCB), Madchen Amick (Twin Peaks) and newcomers Ashleigh Murray, Madelaine Petsch and Camila Mendes.

Frequency, written and executive produced by Supernatural showrunner Jeremy Carver, reimagines the 2000 New Line Cinema film of the same name, following a female police detective in 2016 who discovers she is able to speak via a ham radio with her estranged father (also a detective) who died in 1996. They forge a new relationship while working together on an unresolved murder case, but unintended consequences of the “butterfly effect” wreak havoc in the present day.

Directed by Brad Anderson, the series stars Riley Smith (Nashville), Mekhi Phifer (ER), Peyton List (The Flash, Mad Men), Lenny Jacobson (Nurse Jackie), Anthony Ruivivar (Third Watch), Devin Kelley (Chernobyl Diaries) and Daniel Bonjour (The Walking Dead).

No Tomorrow is written and executive produced by Jane The Virgin scribe Corinne Brinkerhoff and Witches Of East End alum Maggie Friedman, along with writers Scott McCabe and Tory Stanton. When a risk-averse, straight arrow, female procurement manager at an Amazon-like distribution center falls in love with a freewheeling man who lives life to the fullest because he believes the apocalypse is imminent, they embark on a quest together to fulfill their individual bucket lists, to comedic and poignant results.

The hour-long comedy stars Tori Anderson (Open Heart), Josh Sasse (Galavant), Sarayu Blue, (The Real O’Neals), Amy Pietz (The Nine Lives Of Chloe King), Jesse Rath (Defiance) and Jonathan Langdon (Special Correspondents).

Riverdale has been seen as a lock since the project moved to The CW (it was originally in development at Fox). The Berlanti-produced series tested “through the roof,” according to insiders. No Tomorrow was a steady favourite throughout pilot season, gaining more traction as impressive cuts rolled in.

As for Frequency, the buzzed-about reboot nabbed a last-minute series order, as the project was considerably cooling down in recent weeks with sources saying that Transylvania was testing better, while Kevin Williamson’s paranormal project also remained in contention. Although The CW’s schedule will not be unveiled until next week, those close to No Tomorrow say the hour-long comedy could be paired with Jane The Virgin. – Reuters/Laura Prudom
