Local band Bunkface is now selling perfumes

Malaysian rock band Bunkface has released its own brand of fragrances.

For men, there’s Bunkface Revolution and ladies can get their hands on Bunkface For Her.

Guitarist Ahmad Farhan, or better known as Paan, explained that the band started developing the fragrances last year. “A friend approached us with the idea and he had the resources. We thought, why not? It’s something different and we thought it would make a nice collector’s item for our fans.”

Vocalist Shamsul Anuar or Sam believes Bunkface is the first local rock band to have its own fragrances.

“It has never been done by other bands before,” he said during an interview at Menara Star in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

Since the trend of buying music has shifted from physical copies to digital as well as streaming services, Sam feels that it is important for bands to have merchandise to accompany the release of their songs.

“We want our fans to get their hands on something more substantial than just songs in digital form. Previously, we have released official T-shirts to go with singles like Masih Di Sini and Darah Muda. The perfume is a nice new addition,” Sam said.

Bassist Farouk Jaafar (Youk) said Bunkface is looking to expand the range: “Who knows, we might release Darah Muda the fragrance soon.” Since the Bunkface fragrances was first announced in February, Sam shared that they have sold over 20,000 bottles.

Priced at RM39.90 each, Bunkface Revolution has woody, oriental notes featuring the scent of spicy leather with patchouli while Bunkface For Her has ilk tree, night queen flower and bourbon vanilla notes.

The band wanted Bunkface Revolution to evoke a memorable, masculine smell. What about the inspiration for Bunkface For Her? Sam joked that it’s “all Paan”.

“His feminine side inspired the smell!” he said with laugh.
