Walk down memory lane with Adam Cheng and Lisa Wang

It has been forty years since they were last paired together, but Adam Cheng and Liza Wang still remain firm favourites with Hong Kong television audiences.

The two were TVB’s golden couple of the 70s, collaborating in Hong Kong’s classic wuxia drama series like Romance Of The Book And Sword (1976) and The Heaven Sword And Dragon Sabre (1978).

Both veteran artistes turn 70 next year, yet show no signs of slowing down. Last year, Wang and Cheng (together with Jerry Lamb), started hosting a popular musical variety programme titled Sunday Songbird for which they nabbed the Best Host award at the 2015 TVB Anniversary Awards in Hong Kong and 2015 Starhub TVB Awards in Singapore. The pair also took home the commemorative Star Of The Stars award at the latter.

Sunday Songbird is an oldies-themed music show that sees the two seasoned entertainers perform colourful song-and-dance numbers along with their celebrity guests every week. This has proven to be another successful collaboration, as the show’s excellent ratings has since led to a second season.

In separate phone interviews from Hong Kong last week, the showbiz veterans said that while Sunday Songbird keeps them busy all the time, they are also busy preparing for their upcoming concert in Genting Highlands at the end of this month.

“We’ve been working on Sunday Songbird for eight months non-stop, often recording every week. The short breaks in between were mostly spent on preparation for the following shows. We rarely have time for other things,” offered Cheng.

Both chose to keep mum when asked about their songlist, hoping that ‘keeping it mysterious will make it more fun’. “Come and join us for an evening of nostalgia! I think lots of people will be very happy just to see us together on stage,” Wang enthused.

Being the chattier of the two, Cheng revealed more about their concert rundown: “Our challenge this time will be to sing each other’s popular hit songs. We’ll have a sing-off, where we will each belt out the other’s signature hits and other popular songs.”

“We’ve also planned a musical segment that will be a feast for the eyes and ears. There will be some impersonations, but we will not be repeating the things we have done before. We’ve also got some very nice costumes and lots of beautiful performers,” continued the suave leading man best known for the swordplay series Chor Lau Heung (1979).

Apart from regular shoots for Sunday Songbird, both stars also have packed individual schedules.

“I’ve got another concert in Hong Kong followed by some opera shows in September. But, Adam is probably going to be busier than me,” said Wang, who also nabbed My Favourite TVB actress for Limelight Years at the Starhub TVB Awards.

Cheng shared that he had to decline several mainland projects because the weather was too cold and the filming schedules clashed with Sunday Songbird. So, he has been focusing instead on stage performances and other singing engagements.

The Adam Cheng and Liza Wang Concert In Genting 2016 show will be held at Arena Of Stars, Genting Highlands on April 30, 8.30pm. Tickets are priced from RM120 to RM690. For details, contact Resorts World Genting (http://ift.tt/1RHGXWT 1118).
