After an absence of three years, the AIM Chinese Music Awards is back.
Organised by the Recording Industry Association Of Malaysia (RIM), the AIM Chinese 2016 Music Awards ceremony will be held on Sept 12, 8pm, at the Sunway Putra Hotel’s Grand Ballroom.
While the Bahasa Malaysia AIM awards have been a regular affair, this will only be the fourth edition of the Chinese AIM Awards. The first one was held in 1999, followed by another in 2001. The intitial plan was to hold one every two years, but it took another 12 years for the third one to be held in 2013.
“We initially planned to have one last year, but we did not have sufficient funds,” said organising committee chairman Ong Lay Jin during a press conference to announce the awards at the Sunway Putra Hotel recently.
“In the end, it was the perseverence of the organising committee, and also our gracious sponsors, that helped make this a reality.”
The theme of this year’s awards is “Music Shines” and aimed to encourage local Chinese musicians to not just shine within Malaysia, but on the international scene as well.
RIM council vice president Darren Choy said that the Malaysian Chinese music community has grown much stronger over the years, and has seen more and more artistes become successful in Taiwan, China and other countries.
“This shows that we have an incredible talent pool. As an association, RIM will continue to encourage and help bring Malaysian Chinese artistes to the international level,” said Choy.
There will be a total of 23 awards given out at the ceremony, including four that fall under a brand new category called Local Original Classic Music.
“This time, we included this new category to recognise the more traditional and classical music in Malaysia,” explained Ong. “This new category will have four awards – Best Album, Best Male Artiste, Best Female Artiste and Best Song Producer.”
There will also be a brand new “Most Popular” category that will allow members of the public to vote for their favourite artistes.
Award nominations are opened to music (be it songs or albums) in any Chinese dialect released by any RIM member from Jan 1, 2013 to Dec 31, 2015, and the submission deadline for nominations is on April 29, 5pm.
