Temperature rises at 5 Seconds Of Summer’s maiden concert in Kuala Lumpur

Fans at the 5 Seconds Of Summer (5SOS) concert in Kuala Lumpur must have gone home with some very sore, scratchy throats on March 2.

Deafening screams, unbridled cheers and sheer enthusiasm took over Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre throughout the Australian band’s performance which kicked off at 8.25pm.

5 Seconds Of Summer, who rose to fame in 2014 with its debut hit single She Looks So Perfect, was performing for the first time in the country as part of the Sounds Live Feels Live tour to promote the band’s second studio album Sounds Good Feels Good.

Even the four-man band – comprising vocalist Luke Hemmings, bassist Calum Hood, guitarist Michael Clifford and drummer Ashton Irwin – took notice of the passionate, revved-up fans.

“I’m not just saying this, but you’re the best crowd so far,” said Hood. Clifford added: “You guys could most possibly be the most attractive crowd.”

Indeed, 5SOS’ nearly hour-and-a-half set gave the audience something to shout about.

The moment the guys took the stage and delivered Hey Everybody!, they set the tone for the rest of the night. The audience lapped up the catchy tune, an encouraging anthem dedicated to all those struggling to make ends meet.

The crowd, made up of mostly youths, sang and moved along to a slew of infectious, energetic tunes that followed – Money, Don’t Stop and Heartache On The Big Screen.

Somewhere in the middle, members of the pop rock band slowed things down a little with a couple of mellow numbers.

They sang about getting over a break-up in Amnesia, managing a long distance relationship in Beside You and hoping for a chance to start over again with an ex-lover in Jet Black Heart.

I wished they were more of these tender moments which would’ve allowed us to hear more of their voices and showed off a softer side.

“The more you give to us, the more we give to you,” Irwin told the crowd and before I knew it, the band picked the energy right back up again with End Up Here and Good Girls.

The concert was one fun, massive earworm after another, performed with reckless abandon, and about 17 songs later, we were left wondering how the time had flown by so quickly.

The band closed the show with crowd favourites She’s Kinda Hot and She Looks So Perfect.

Besides giving fans a lively performance, the guys interacted with the crowd throughout the concert, whether it was trying to speak Bahasa Malaysia, checking in on the crowd every now and then or just spewing plain random thoughts.

Clifford who was shouting Kuala Lumpur repeatedly at one point reasoned: “It’s such a good name to yell because it takes a few seconds (to say it).”

It’s also nice to see every member of the band shine, with each taking turns to deliver their solo parts and saying something to the fans.

“I need to know you’re gonna come back and see us again,” Irwin said. Judging by the wild screams that ensued (and not to mention, all night long), rest assured, fans of 5S0S will be back.
