Even after starring in the costume drama Downton Abbey and then strapping on a corset for last year’s fairy-tale flick Cinderella, Lily James is not quite ready to give up on the period genre just yet.
The 26-year-old British actress will be in the new movie Pride And Prejudice And Zombies, based on the 2009 book by Seth Grahame-Smith, in which 19th- century England is populated by the living dead.
James plays Elizabeth Bennet, who battles zombies with her sisters in their period costumes. “We were in the corsets and look sort of like these gentle girls, and then suddenly, when it got to it, we were like so fierce and like a pack of wolves,” James tells Huffington Post in an interview.
“(My character) gets to kick the crap out of everyone, and that was just fun. It was like Spice Girls with swords,” she says in another interview with AOL. The actress reveals that she had to train hard for the fighting scenes because she didn’t work out at all during her time at Downton Abbey.
“I had just been doing Downton Abbey, where you don’t have to exercise at all. You just drink tea and eat biscuits, so I had to get really, really fit,” she offers. Pride And Prejudice And Zombies also stars Sam Riley, Lena Headey, Douglas Booth, Suki Waterhouse and James’s boyfriend Matt Smith.
